The headline ingredients
Grape seed and green tea
Both are rich in antioxidants. Grape seed proanthocyanidins and the green tea compound EGCG have protected inner-ear hair cells in laboratory and animal studies. Human hearing trials have not yet been done.
Panax ginseng, eleuthero and astragalus
These are classic adaptogenic herbs. Ginseng and astragalus have been studied in animals for protecting hearing against noise or drug damage, with encouraging but early results.
Maca root
A Peruvian root traditionally used for stamina and mood. Small human studies support energy and mood; it has no specific link to hearing.
GABA and L-tryptophan
GABA is a calming messenger in the brain, and tryptophan is the building block of serotonin. They may help you feel more relaxed, which some people find makes ringing in the ears less bothersome.
L-arginine and capsicum
Arginine is used by the body to make nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels, and capsaicin from capsicum is studied for circulation and inflammation. Good blood flow matters for the inner ear.
The surprising ingredients
Guarana, African mango, coleus forskohlii, raspberry ketones, gymnema and L-carnitine are best known from energy and weight-management products. Guarana in particular supplies caffeine. Their link to hearing is weak, so it is worth knowing they are there, especially if you are sensitive to stimulants.
Beware of other ingredient lists
Some websites list ginkgo, NAC, magnesium, zinc or vitamin B12 with large doses for Audifort. None of these appear on the official label. Trust the label on your own bottle.
